One of the major objectives of the Birmingham
Gospel Centre is to reach the Chinese in Birmingham for Christ
by means of providing social services. A few months ago, the Gospel
Centre started a new service in co-operation with the Chinese
Evangelical Church of Birmingham. This service is similar to an
advertising agency or newspaper that connects those seeking employment
and those who wish to provide employment. They can put up their
advertisement in the Centre free of charge. By means of this service,
we hope we can have more opportunities to contact the Chinese
and, if possible, invite them along to the Chinese Church or to
future events held at the Gospel Centre which might be of interest
to them.
Sometimes we are even able to do personal evangelism
or share our personal testimonies when these people on the spot.
We thank God that since this service is welcome by the local Chinese
in the catering business. So far, over 100 advertisements have
been posted through this service.
At the same time we have also a Cantonese class
for those from mainland China in search of employment in the catering
business, as they mostly speak Mandarin while the majority of
Chinese restaurants and takeaways are run by Cantonese-speaking
people. We also invite them to the Mandarin-speaking Bible study
group set up by the Chinese Evangelical Church. Much time is needed
to nurture and establish our relationship with this group and
it is our prayer that God will guide and lead them to receive
Christ as their Saviour.
We also provide a service for new immigrants,
mainly from Hong Kong, who are adjusting to life in this country.
For instance, we give practical tips and advice on purchasing
a house or a car, how to set up a bank account, information about
the National or private Health Service, etc. It is our desire
to see that these people are given help in an unfamiliar surrounding
and culture. Our prayer is that people will be attracted to the
Lord Jesus through our witness and love in Christ, and that this
will also facilitate the Church with their outreach ministry.
